Workshop in Melbourne. *Finished
A workshop was held in Melbourne, Australia, introducing the art of kintsugi—a traditional Japanese method of repairing ceramics using natural lacquer. For this event, we used antique Japanese vessels that had naturally developed cracks or chips over time. Of the five stages in the restoration process, the first four were carried out by specialists, while participants experienced the final step: applying lacquer and sprinkling gold powder.
The sessions included an explanation of the history, philosophy, and cultural background of kintsugi, as well as its therapeutic aspects, an introduction to the natural lacquer used, and demonstrations of each stage of the process. Participants were able to take home the pieces they had restored themselves.
While midsummer in Japan coincides with midwinter in Australia—raising concerns about the lacquer’s drying time—the repairs were successfully completed. All participants produced beautiful results. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Ms. Monica and Mr. William of Miyama Melbourne, the other staff members, Ms. N for kindly offering her home, and Ms. Otone for coordinating the event.

In this workshop, you will experience the final coating and sprinkling of gold or tin powder on old Japanese pottery that has been restored over time by a Kintsugi expert using real lacquer. The materials used are lacquer and real gold or tin powder. Because it is a natural material, it is a traditional method that is completely food safe and ideal for tableware. Each step up to the finishing stage will be demonstrated using actual tools and materials, and we will introduce the history and philosophy of Kintsugi behind it, as well as various finishing methods and aftercare.
